These genes recognizes the sequence CCTTGAG. Sox genes encode putative transcriptional regulators implicated in the decision of cell fates during development and the control of diverse developmental processes. At present, 30 Sox genes have been identified. SOX9 is involved in skeletal development. SOX9 regulates the expression of other genes which play a role in chondrogenesis by performing as a transcription factor for these genes. SOX9 takes part in chondrocyte differentiation and, together with steroidogenic factor 1; SOX9 regulates transcription of the anti-Muellerian hormone gene.
